Richard Youngs - Under Stellar Stream [Jagjaguwar]

Richard Youngs' latest offering from an extensive 20 year career explores the bustle of everyday life through the medium of the solo chant, accompanied by detached organs and droning bass softly punctuated by the occasional clinking of bells.

In 'Cluster to a Star', Youngs conjures up the image of a medieval horseman under a clear night sky, only to reassert the song's modern sensibilities with lyrics such as "I rode out this morning down an ozone corridor". Elsewhere, the record is absorbing, but seldom captures the imagination this well.

With few changes in texture or volume, the album can send the listener into a dreamy trance that hypnotises until the last distant chord of 'The Bells Of Spring.'

Whilst by no means possessing instantaneous allure, Under Stellar Stream should please fans of minimalism and ambience, offering a trip to a poetic and ethereal world.
